Monthly Vehicle Safety Checklist

What we check every month

A monthly look over the car, done at the home so the vehicle does not have to go anywhere. Carried out with a licensed mechanic, and anything that needs their attention is reported to you before any work starts.

Tires

• Check air pressure, including the spare
• Inspect tread depth and wear pattern
• Look for cuts, bulges, nails or dry rot

Lights and electrical

• Test headlights on high and low beam, brake lights, turn signals, hazard lights and reverse lights
• Check the dashboard for any warning light that is illuminated

Fluids

• Engine oil level
• Coolant and antifreeze level in the reservoir
• Brake fluid level
• Windshield washer fluid
• Transmission fluid, where the vehicle has a dipstick
• Power steering fluid, where applicable

Brakes

• Listen for squealing or grinding
• Check for vibration when braking
• Check the pedal feel, since too soft or too stiff is a red flag

Windshield and wipers

• Inspect the windshield for cracks and chips
• Test wiper function and the condition of the blades
• Check the washer spray

Belts and hoses

• Look for cracks, fraying or bulges in the serpentine belt and any visible hoses

Battery

• Check for corrosion at the terminals
• Make sure connections are tight
• Look for swelling or leaks in the battery case

Safety equipment

• Test the horn
• Check that seat belts click and retract smoothly
• Confirm the airbag dash light cycles properly and turns off after starting
• Verify the jack, lug wrench, first aid kit and fire extinguisher are present, where they are carried
